Hi everyone- I am doing a presentation on health care disparities and ASD for a class at U of M flint in Feb. I've got the main points down they asked me to cover, but if you have any specific concerns about health care services for individuals on the spectrum I would be greatly interested. I am covering basic info on ASD, what NOT to do/misunderstandings or misinterpretations of behavior related to ASD, how to be ASD oriented in working with clients/how to have a ASD-friendly practice. The audience is mostly health care admin, social work, and physical therapy students. If you have specific suggestions, please post by Jan30. I am especially interested in those with older/young adults/adults with ASD (I've had a lot of experience talking with parents of young kids, and could always learn more, but I'm sure there's much more to be concerned about as things like puberty, individual privacy for young adults, and communication difficulties that may make it hard for adults with ASD to talk with their health care providers. I'm all ears! Tamara

I'm all ears! Tamara Hi Tamara, These are things that I think are areas of concern: Having appointments on the same day and time to assist with routine. Young adults need to have a medical card with info with them at all times that contains dr's name, phone, medications, emergency contact, etc. Transportation is difficult for young adults as most do not drive and depend on public transportation or caregivers to drive. Prescriptions, most young adults depend on their caregivers to get them and fill them on time. If I think of more, I'll post for you. Amy
